The Colorful Series were born from my love of the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. To me, there is something so playful about that color combination, and I wanted vivid shades to make every piece stand out. For some reason, all the figures in the series have their arms up, I guess it’s because the Colorful Series is about having a bold time.
The Halftone Series began with a assignment prompt that required only two colors per illustration. I took it as a challenge to make a piece with as many color variations as possible, which is where halftones became useful. It’s common knowledge that blue and red make purple, but purple is such an obscure color that there are varying degrees of shades. So I tapped into that. I layered halftone patterns on other halftone patterns, and I wove them into my artwork to engage the eye.
Animals have always been interesting and beautiful to me, for a multitude of reasons. But what I can appreciate most about them, as an artist, are the colors and patterns that they have. Tigers have black stripes, but underneath that there’s the white that contours their face and the sandstone orange that covers the rest of them. Snakes have scales! Beautiful plates, shelved to create a staggered design. The Animal Series is my appreciation to the wonders of the animal kingdom.
